Home Care Support Worker

Salary:£7.95 rising to £8.17 (Weekends) plus £0.32 per hour bonus

Care workers are the front line staff in all care settings.  They work with all types of people who need care and support, who receive direct care.

Their duties vary depending on the needs of the individual, they are responsible for the individuals overall comfort and wellbeing and help people who need care and support to live as independently as possible.  Duties can include:

  • Assisting and enabling
  • Washing and dressing
  • Making food and refreshments
  • Mobility
  • Bed making
  • Providing interest and activities to stimulate and engage the service user
  • Record keeping

Care workers work as part of a larger team and are supervised by a manager or senior care worker.  Their work is defined by a care plan, which is usually developed by a social worker or a care manager to meet the assessed needs of the person requiring care or support.


There are no specific minimum qualifications to begin this job although workers must go through a criminal records check and industry standard induction training.  Training will also be given on the job in food hygiene, health and safety, and manual handling.


Everyone working in adult social care needs English, number, digital and employability skills (including team work, problem solving, planning on-going learning and development and managing your own health and wellbeing).  These are known as core skills.

Different roles require a different level of skill.  Here are a few examples of the core skills you might need as a care worker.

  • Speaking skills to communicated with someone you are supporting
  • Writing skills to fill in a care plan
  • Number skills to maybe calculate BMI

  • 0.20 per mile fuel allowance for drivers
NB. Bonus scheme is paid on a performance basis. Staff performance is reviewed monthly.
