Understanding Changes to the DLA in the UK

At Delta Care we know how much administration and confusion there can be when a loved one needs more care. We are the care experts in the Preston and Southport area so we are often turned to for advice. There have been a number of changes with benefits and entitlements over recent years. It can sometimes be hard to keep up with exactly what is happening with these changes so we have put together a few bits of information regarding Disability Living Allowance.

One of the changes is that Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for those making new claims. For those currently receiving DLA that were under the age of 65 on 8th April 2013, a PIP assessment will have taken place. All over 65s from that date will continue to receive the DLA benefit for as long as they are eligible.

What is PIP?

The Personal Independence Payment is a benefit for people with extra care or mobility needs as a result of a disability. It is replacing the DLA for people aged between 16 and 64. Applicants can apply for and can qualify for both the daily living and mobility component.

What is the Allowance?

Depending on how difficult it is for an applicant to do certain things during the day, such as making food and drink, moving around, getting dressed and other daily chores, the amount received can differ. There is a weekly standard rate of £55.65 for daily living and £22.00 for mobility, with enhanced rates increasing to £83.10 and £55.00 respectively.

How to Claim PIP?

There are a few easy steps to take in order to claim PIP. To begin, call the DWP (Department for Works and Pensions) on 0800 917 2222 to provide your basic information. Once you have received, filled out an application form and returned it a healthcare professional will assess your claim and visit your home if necessary.

There are many benefits and entitlements that are just not widely discussed or known about. Take for instance the Cold Weather Payment (different to the winter fuel allowance. Cold weather payments of £25 per 7-day period are automatically made to certain individuals claiming pension credit, income support, Universal Credit and Jobseeker's Allowance, and come into play should the average temperature in your area be recorded as, or forecast to be zero degrees or below for 7 consecutive days.
